Pros and Cons

To Self Publish or To Traditional Publish
...that is the question.

I've been looking into a few ideas on how to get published and there really isn't a clear direction in which to go.  Check it out and give me some feedback if you have any!

Self Publish
Pros
I get my book published quickly.
I don't have to spend time writing a proposal, query letter and finding an agent.
I keep 50% of profits on each book.
I keep all control over my book.

Cons
I have to spend the money up front ($1000-$4000)...not pocket change for the Replogle's.
It's not as prestigious.
I have to do more work with marketing (cuz I've got SO much spare time).

Traditional Publish
Pros
They usually pay you up front.
You have an agent that works for you.
Usually sell more books.
It is easier to get a second book published.
Prestige.  Prestige. Prestige.

Cons
I loose all control over my book (title, look, words, etc.)
Only about 1% of new authors get signed.
It sometimes takes up to 4-6 years to get anything published...if at all.
I only keep on average 10% of profits on each book (and then my agent will get 15% of my profit )

Now where is that Easy button when you need it?

I will lead the blind by ways they have not known,
along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth.
These are the tings I will do;
I will not forsake them.

Isaiah 42:16

  1. Natalie - I had no idea you were writing! This is so cool! Writing is a lot more work than a lot of people give it credit for, and after having attended a couple publishing conferences (no, I have no current plans to write anything other than lyrics) I can tell you with confidence that the publishing industry is in a similar state of de/re-construction to the music business. Good luck - an don't forget to hire a good publicist!

  2. My 1st instinct would say Self Publish but I seriously don't know any of the workings when it comes to publishing a book! Many blessings to you as you make this decision! And hopefully you'll get some better advice than mine! :)

  3. It's so hard. I know. This is where the real question of "What exactly IS my dream?" comes in. For some people, the dream is simply having their work of art in their hands - bound and titled with their name on the cover - so they can share it with other people. And maybe by word of mouth or popularity, a self-published work catches the eye of someone in publishing. For others, the dream is being published. Feeling the validation of a publishing house logo on the book cover. Having the security of getting your foot in the door if you want to make this a career. That's a question that only you can answer.
I'll add a couple of cons to the traditional publishing list:
Sometimes you aren't paid up front (although that will often mean a larger cut of profit from sales).
Oftentimes you are required in your contract to purchase a certain number of copies of your book (at a discount) which can be fairly pricey.
Even with traditional publishing, there is still TONS of marketing that the author is responsible for.
But there are very cool things too. Working closely with a publisher/editor (we don't have an agent) helps you learn so much about honing the craft and how the process works. Hearing someone express confidence in your work is so rewarding. (Even if no one buys our book, at least someone liked it! :))

Whichever road you pursue, it will be both challenging and fulfilling - because it's your dream. I'm looking forward to reading more about your plans!

  5. Nat, I can't imagine having to make this choice. I am confident that God will direct you and make things happen in HIS timing. I have a resource person for you....Ruth Ayres. She is our corporation writing coach and has published. She may have some helpful advice or insight. You can email her at rayres@wawasee.k12.in.us and ask her. I think Lee knows her too. Just thought that might help. Love you!!!!
